The Bishop Savaryn Virtues Project

As children grow from infancy to adulthood, they need to acquire certain character-strengths: sound judgment, a sense of responsibility, personal courage, and self-mastery. These habits of mind and will and heart have traditionally been called the virtues. Children internalize these lifelong habits in three ways:

Example- What they see in the lives of parents and other adults whom they respect and unconsciously imitate.

Practice- What we have them do as parents and other respected adults.

Word- What they hear from parents and other respected adults as explanation for what they see and are led to do.

This year at Bishop Savaryn School we have decided to focus on a different virtue for each of our monthly assemblies. Over the year we will focus attention on several virtues. Students will be encouraged to develop and practice values that encourage ethics, integrity and love. They will work on developing fuller spiritual lives.

The chosen virtue is then a topic of focus for the month in all grades, in various classes. These classes could be religion, art, CFL, and Language Arts. Each grade has been encouraged to take part in a special way during one of the assemblies. Children have shared drawings and performed skits based of the virtue of the month. Student prayers, stories, pictures and poems will be posted to our web site throughout the year.

The teachers at Bishop Savaryn School have found the book: The Family Virtues Guide by Linda Kavelin Popov a valuable resource.

We would like to encourage other schools to share their experiences and stories about the virtues with us. Please email us at melnykl@ecsd.net and we will add a link to your site from our page or post your comments.
