What Does Compassion Look Like?

You are practicing compassion when you:

  • Notice when someone is hurt or needs a friend.

  • Care enough to stop what you are doing and let her/him know that you care.

  • Listen to her/him and try very hard to understand.

  • Forgive her/him when they hurt you.

  • Help people and animals in need.

My Son Luke

If I can remember right it all happened on March 1, 2035. That’s right I can remember it as if it was yesterday. I was thirty-five years old and I was scared to death.

I was walking down an inner city street in New York City called Oak Street when one guy who was wearing very old and dirty clothes asked, "Do you have fifty cents for coffee?"

I felt really bad for him so I said as I flipped it to him," Yeah here is a dollar."

The man said," You’re a kind man! "

I kept on walking. I started to reflect on and realized how lucky I was just to have a place to sleep and food to eat each day.

As I turned the corner of the ally I saw a little boy about six years old that was crying. I wasn’t sure why he was crying. Then I saw the back of his head. He had a huge cut that would need at least sixty stitches.

I ran to the little boy and said," What’s your name? I’m going to help you."

The boy replied in between cries," My name is Luke. "

I said, "Ok Luke, I’m going to take you to the hospital."

As I picked up Luke, I started to think of where the nearest hospital was. It was on St. Mark Street, 1000 meters east. I started to run to St. Mark Street carrying Luke.

After about five hundred meters of running we ran into two guys who were wearing a ball cap and leather vests. The smaller of the two pulled out a gun.

I yelled at them, "Leave me alone, I have to get this boy to the hospital."

Then the bigger one of the two said, "Well I guess we will have to just beat you both up."

I put Luke down. I jumped up in the air double kicked the bigger one in the head. He fell down. As I was landing I side kicked the other one hard in the gut. He fell down with a loud thump! This gave me enough time to take off their jackets and use them to tie the gangster to a lamppost.

I picked Luke up and asked, "How you doing?"

He replied, "Worse, I’ve lost a lot of blood. "

I ripped off the sleeve of my jacket, and tied it around his cut like a bandage.

I started to run in the direction of the hospital. We were almost there when Luke became unconscious.

I said, "Oh No!" I started to run super fast.

I was finally there! I walked in and the nurse looked at Luke

I said, "This boy has a big cut on his head and has lost lots of blood."

The nurse said, "We’ll get him to ER, then we will give him some stitches and some units of blood."

I asked, "Will he be ok?"

The nurse said, "I’m not sure."

They took Luke to the ER. I followed closely behind. I waited 3 hours out side the door. The doctor walked out and said, "He’s ok, but Luke tells me he’s homeless. Could you be his father?"

I thought it over and then said, "Sure."

On March fifteen, 2035, Luke legally became my son.

It’s been twenty years since then. Now I’m forty-five. I have a wife, three children (including Luke, he’s twenty-six), and I have one grandchild.

Compassion

Virtues are important rules that you must obey in order to be happy with yourself and the people around you.

Compassion is the virtue that shows you care. You may see there is someone who is sad and needs cheering up. If you are compassionate, you want to cheer that person up. If someone has hurt you, and they apologize, you are showing compassion when you forgive them.

JIM

"The game is 2-1," screamed Jim’s mom, "I hope Jim scores the tying goal!" Jim’s best friend Greg passed it to Jim. Jim dropped a pass to Greg. Greg one timers it and shoots it top shelf and ties the game up at 2-2.

In overtime, Jim’s brother Tom, who’s plays for the Detroit Red Wings, says to Jim, " I know you could score this next goal. You just have to believe in yourself."

Jim went out on the ice with Greg and the other three best players on the team. The other team won the face-off. They did a long pass up the ice but Greg intercepted the pass and gave a breakaway pass to Jim. Jim did an amazing deak and scores. Jim finally won the championship for the Juniors. Now, his only dream is to make it to the NHL.

"We won, we won!" screamed Jim as he skated toward Tom.

"I saw!" said Tom.

As soon as Jim got home he called all his friends to tell them the good news. Then he got ready for bed. That night he slept well knowing that he was the new champion.

10 YEARS LATER

Jim is now 21 and his brother Tom is retired. On the way to Oilers try-outs Jim stops by a church to ask God for help.

Jim tried his best but didn’t make it. They put him on the Oilers farm team. Tom came to all of Jim’s games to cheer him on.

Jim got so good that he was drafted for the Oilers. During the first game Jim played so hard that he scored the winning goal. He worked so hard most of the year. He was awarded player of the year.

During Jim’s last game he was on a break away but a player from the other team gave him a cheap shot in the kidney. Jim was down for a long time. He had really damaged his kidney.

Tom heard the doctor say that Jim needed a kidney transplant for him to play hockey again. Tom knew of Jim’s dream to play hockey in the NHL. Tom talked to the doctor and offered one of his kidneys.

Jim got rushed to the operating room and a kidney transplant was performed. After a few days, Jim woke up from the operation. The doctor told Jim that he could play hockey again next year.
