What Does Tolerance Look Like?

You are practicing tolerance when you:

  • Accept things you don’t like about people.
  • Are able to sort out what is important from what is not.
  • Show patience and forgiveness when people make mistakes.
  • Accept what you cannot change with good grace.
  • Give others space to be and space to grow.
  • Accept differences with patience.

You are being tolerant when you are able to accept things that you wish were different.

Tolerance gives us the power to stick with a situation even when it gets uncomfortable.

We accept things with good grace instead of complaining.

When you are tolerant you agree to disagree with someone. You don’t insist on seeing it your way.

The Virtue of Tolerance

Virtues are important for you to achieve a good life. They are important rules that you must obey for you to be happy with yourself and the people around you.

Tolerance is a virtue that can be seen in a situation when someone makes fun of you, or does something that you do not like. If you are tolerant, you will not react or say anything. Some ways to be tolerant are walking away, telling someone older about it, or ignoring it. Being tolerant is the best way to deal with it.

Friends

" Ah!" screamed Roxanne Delpaz as she walked in class knowing that Jamie had really scared her.

"You don’t always have to be afraid you know," Jamie Valeraino exclaimed.

"I know but you just frightened me! When you jumped out like that," cried Roxanne.

"Well lets just go to our seats and get focused on French class," said Jamie.

During French, all the students were asked to study but Jamie on the other hand was throwing bits of paper at Roxanne. Roxanne hated that so much she decided to tell the teacher Miss Greensburg.

"Jamie will you please get focused on your work and cut that out. Please." Miss Greensburg replied.

Later, Jamie exclaimed, "You know you don’t have to be such a tattle tail!"

"I know but I had enough of you trying to bother me while I’m trying to study," Roxanne answered.

"You know what? Your such a baby!" Jamie shouted out.

" I am not! You know what? Lets just forget about this and get back to our work."

" Fine with me," agreed Jamie.

At recess, Roxanne didn’t realize that the sidewalk had a crack in it so she tripped and landed on the sidewalk. She ripped her pants. She didn’t know that Jamie had seen her. Jamie started laughing and called her a clumsy girl. All Roxanne wanted to do was cry and talk to her mom, but she couldn’t. She ignored Jamie till the end of the day.

When she got home she cried. She talked about it with her mom. "Just ignore her." commented her mom. That night all she could think about was how to ignore Jamie.

The next day Jamie wasn’t in school so Roxanne was so glad. Her teachers were very surprised because she stayed so focused. She even got a prize for working hard. That day she didn’t have to worry about a thing.

The next day Jamie was back at school. Roxanne knew this day would be horrible, but it wasn’t. Jamie didn’t even bother her or even call her names. Roxanne decided to talk to her.

"What’s wrong with you?" asked Roxanne.

" Nothing much. Why?" answered Jamie.

"Because you usually bother me and call me names."

"Well I did some thinking and what I did to you was pretty mean and if I was in your position I would do exactly what you did." exclaimed Jamie. "I’m really sorry. I hope we could just be friends instead of enemies.

"Well I’m sorry too, I guess I was pretty mean to you too."

"No, you weren’t," Jamie exclaimed.

"You know what? Let’s forget about this and stop arguing," said Roxanne.

"Sure," exclaimed Jamie " so what do you think about being friends?"

"Yeah, I think it is a good idea," Roxanne replied. "What do you think?"

"Yeah, sure, maybe even best friends," said Jamie.

"Really?" Roxanne asked.

"Yeah," Jamie exclaimed, " Sure, maybe someday."

So, that day, they became good friends because they were tolerant of each other.
